Q : What was your dream when you were a high school student, a young Morrison?
Ken Morrison : In some ways, I was like a lot of young people in the US. I wanted to play sports in college and I dreamed of maybe playing sports after college. As I look back as an adult, I realize that I really wasn't that good. But I was good enough to have big dreams. But they were just dreams. On some days, I played really really well. But I wasn't very consistent in my performance. On other days, I was maybe just a little bit better than average for small towns, But it was a lot of fun. Also, those dreams and discipline kept me out of trouble, so that was one important part of my high school days. That was not really my full career dream. That was just something that I liked to dream about. The other things that I really wanted to do were broadcasting or something with computers. I don't feel that I am old, but at that time, computers were still pretty new as far as average people having computers. It was still a pretty new idea. It was growing so fast. It was a very exciting time. I was just very interested in seeing what would happen with computers. Also, I was very interested in doing broadcasting or something with video. I was also interested in possibly being on camera, so I had many interests. But most of those interests had to do with media and mass communication.
이한규 : 교수님이 고등학교 학생이었을 때, 어떤 꿈을 가지고 계셨나요?
캔 모리슨 : 어떤 면에서 저는 미국의 평범한 학생에 불과했어요. 저는 대학에서 운동을 하는 것을 좋아했고, 아마 대학을 졸업하고 나선 어떤 종목의 운동선수가 되고 싶다는 꿈을 꿨던 것 같아요. 어른이 되어 저를 되돌아보면, 저는 그렇게 멋진 사람은 아니었어요. 하지만 큰 꿈을 가지기엔 충분한 사람이었죠. 고작 꿈들이었어요. 어느 날엔 경기에서 정말 좋은 모습을 보였지요. 하지만 그런 성과들이 지속되지는 않았어요. 다른 날은 제가 살아온 조그만 도시에서 평균 정도밖에 안 되는 경기력을 보였으니까요. 하지만 이러한 꿈을 가짐으로 인해서 저는 골칫거리들에서 벗어날 수 있었어요. 아직도 고등학교 생활의 중요한 부분으로 남아있는 기억들이네요. 운동선수가 되겠다는 꿈이 내 꿈의 전부는 아니었어요. 그건 단지, 아 이런 사람이 되었으면 좋겠다는 바람 정도였다고 하면 쉽겠네요. 운동 선수 말고 제가 꿈꿔왔던 건 아마 방송이나 컴퓨터에 관련된 일이었을 거에요. 나는 지금의 내가 그리 늙었다고 생각하지는 않지만, 내 어린 시절에 컴퓨터는 평균적인 사람들이 가질 수 없는 새로운 형태의 기술이었어요. 지금도 컴퓨터는 여전히 새로운 아이디어로 받아들여지고 있고요. 컴퓨터는 엄청 빨리 발전해왔어요. 아주 흥미진진한 시간들이었고, 저는 컴퓨터에 관련해 일어나는 일들에 관해 관심이 많았어요. 또한 방송과 비디오에 관련된 일에도 흥미가 있었죠. 되돌아 보면 저는 많은 것들에 관심이 있었는데, 그중 단연 관심이 있었던 분야는 매스컴과 미디어에 관련된 일들이었던 거 같아요.
Q : Nowadays most of students do not have a dream. They don’t know what they like, what they love, what they want to be. But you found your passion and skills early in life. Can you advise a young student who doesn't have a dream?
Ken Morrison : First, I think that your college years are a wonderful time to find your dream because colleges are a rare opportunity when you are around a lot of people who often talk about their dreams. And I think that the best way to learn what your dream is to be around a lot of people who talk about their dreams. It is important to just see the passion in people’s eyes and voices. It can make you say to yourself, "Oh, wow maybe I don't have that person's dream, but being around his energy makes me energetic." And it is good to have your eyes open your mind open to many different types of dreams. When I was in graduate school, I kind of accidentally created a great strategy. I studied a lot and I got tired of being in the same building all the time. It was not a strategy but what I did is study in different buildings every day. So, maybe I will go to the art building and study in their lounge. I would be around students who would be talking about art what’s happening in the art world art and talking about their classes. Then on the next day, I would go to the business department and find out what they are doing in their classes. Then on the next day, I would be in the computer science area. I did not go into the classes, but I simply learned many things by studying in the lobby of other departments. I think that just being exposed to a lot of people with a lot of different interests is very valuable. If you truly don't know what your dream is. I would say that the first step is to expose yourself to people with many types of dreams.
The Second step to find your dream is to try a lot of things in college. College is a great opportunity because each university spends so much money on clubs. Join a club and let the club president know early that you are not positive if this is what you love to do. Tell her or him that it is something that you are interested in. I would say to join a few clubs and just be around people who love what they do. In the USA, we say 'get your feet wet' and just explore a little bit to decide if that ocean of information and talent is something that you are interested in. That is two things. I think the worst thing to do is to sit in your apartment and feel bad that you don't have a dream. I think that is the worst thing that a person can do. And the best thing is just to try to do things, be around new people and new ideas. If you do that every week, eventually you will learn about many people’s dreams and you might find a dream that matches your heart.
이한규 : 요즘 학생들은 꿈이 없지요. 그들은 자신이 뭘 좋아하는지, 어떤 직업을 가져야 할지도 모르고 있어요. 하지만 교수님은 어린 시절에 위와 같은 꿈을 키워 오셨지요. 꿈을 가지고 있지 않은 학생들에게 충고 한 말씀 해주실 수 있으세요?
캔 모리슨 : 첫 번째로, 대학 생활은 꿈을 찾을 수 있는 아주 소중한 시간이란 사실을 알았으면 해요. 왜냐하면 많은 사람들과 함께 꿈에 대해 이야기할 수 있는 기회는 드물거든요. 그리고 자신의 꿈을 찾는 가장 좋은 방법은 그 많은 사람들과 꿈에 대해 이야기하는 거에요. 다른 사람들의 목소리를 듣고 두 눈을 바라보며 그들의 열정을 보는 것이 얼마나 중요한데요. 이런 행동들은 당신 자신이 '나는 이들과 같은 꿈을 가지고 있지는 않지만, 이들의 에너지가 나를 더욱 열정적으로 만들어 주는구나'라고 말하게 할지도 몰라요. 그렇게 되면 당신은 더 열린 마음으로 당신이 꿈꿀 수 있는 다양한 꿈들에 대해 생각해 보겠죠. 제가 대학원 공부를 하고 있을 때 저는 전략 하나를 세웠어요. 저는 당시 공부를 많이 했고, 같은 건물에서 온종일 공부를 하는 것에 대해 피곤함을 느끼고 있었죠. 저는 그래서 매일 다른 건물로 가서 공부를 했어요. 그래서 저는 미대 건물에서 공부를 했고, 미대 학생들이 그들의 수업과 미술계의 경향에 대해 이야기하는 걸 들을 수 있었죠. 그리고 다음 날은 경영학과로 가서 그들이 수업에 무엇을 배우는 지 들었어요. 그 다음 날엔 컴퓨터 공학과에 갔지요. 저는 그 모든 수업들을 듣지 않았어요. 하지만 단순히 다른 과의 로비에 앉아 해당 과의 학생들이 하는 이야기를 들으면서 많은 걸 배울 수 있었죠. 다양한 관심사를 가진 사람들의 이야기를 듣는 건 아주 중요하다고 생각해요. 만약 당신이 아직 무엇을 꿈꿔야 할지 모르겠다면, 저는 당신에게 권하고 싶어요. 다양한 사람들의 꿈을 직접 들어보라고!
두 번째로, 꿈을 찾기 위해 대학에서 많은 것들을 시도해 보세요. 대학은 학생들이 운영하는 클럽에 대해 많은 돈을 투자하고 있어요. 이것들은 분명 좋은 기회일 거예요. 클럽에 가입하고, 클럽장에게 아직 확신은 안 서지만, 당신이 이 분야에 관심이 있다고 말해두세요. 저는 당신이 여러 개의 클럽에 가입해, 자신이 좋아하는 일을 하는 클럽의 회원들을 둘러봤으면 좋겠어요. 미국에서는 '당신의 발을 적셔라'라는 속담이 있어요. 뭐든지 간에 조금이라도 겪어 보고, 당신이 능력이 있고 관심이 있는지 파악하라는 의미죠. 당신의 집에 앉아 나는 꿈이 없어 하고는 상심에 젖는 건 정말 멍청한 짓이에요. 하지만 새로운 사람들과 아이디어 사이에서 무언가를 시도하는 건 정말 멋진 행동이죠. 매주 이러한 일들을 행한다면, 결국 당신은 많은 사람들의 꿈으로부터 무언가를 배울 것이고, 당신에게 딱 맞는 꿈을 찾아낼 수 있을 거에요.
Q : Okay, there is another case. Nowadays, some students have a dream, but they don’t know how to achieve it. Can you advise them like your four internship experiences in your college years?
Ken Morrison : I understand that the US is a little bit different than Korea. But one spring during my junior year of college, all my friends were planning spring break. My friends we all going to the beach and they were saying, "Ken lets go to the beach. Lets go to the beach!" It was cold in Nebraska and I wanted to go the beach. But instead, I took a very special phone-book home that I borrowed from my university library. This book had the list of every media company in the United States and Canada. I just spent my first day of spring break reading it and asking myself, "Where would I love to work?" and "Where should I even try? On the next day, I started calling and calling all of these companies for about five days in a row. I called every major league baseball team, every radio and TV station that covers them. I called advertising agencies who made advertisements for these teams. I called everybody and I decided that I was going to do my best to get an internship at the top top top level in our country. I figured that I was young, I had a good education, many experiences, and many opportunities and professors who helped me develop my skill. So I decided that I was going to try to get the top top internship that I could get. I got two real offers from Major League Baseball teams and others that were somewhat interested. I spent the entire summer of 1998 on the St. Louis Cardinals baseball field, dugout and media booths. I met many celebrities and many of my childhood baseball stars. It was a magical summer. I know for sure that I would not have had my magical summer of 1998 if I had just gone to the beach with my friends.
What I am advising is that you should not just say, "Oh, I can't do that internship". Make sure you get many many many "No's" before you even consider giving up. You must believe that you can do it. But you also can't just expect to jump into a top top internship. You have to work your way to that level. For example, I didn't try to get a major league internship until I did three other internships. I did an internship with NBC sports where I showed my bosses that I can make daily deadlines for the real nightly news. Almost every day, I would have at least one deadline. On some days I had two very important deadlines for both the five o'clock news and one of the ten o'clock news. And so I did that for one whole summer. This internship was at the same TV news station where my broadcasting hero, Tom Brokaw started his broadcasting career. During that summer, I took a second internship on weekends working with a minor league baseball team. Before that, I did an advertising internship. All of these internships started very small and I worked my way up during the summer months. If you don't get your internship goal, don't waste that break. Instead, do a smaller internship in Daejeon or whatever your city is. If you can't write for the Daejeon paper, find something that you can do in your smaller community or in your college clubs, or for whatever organizations you care about. Find some way to show future employers that you can take responsibility, you can meet deadlines, that you are serious in improving your skills, and that you can work well with people.
이한규 : 자 그럼 이번엔 다른 경우에요. 요즘 학생들 중에는 꿈이 있음에도 그것을 어떻게 이뤄야 할지 모르는 친구들이 많죠. 그들을 위해 조언 한 마디 해주실 수 있으세요?
캔 모리슨 : 미국은 한국과 꽤 다르지요. 하지만 제 대학교 3학년 봄날에 대해 이야기하고 싶어요. 제 주변의 모든 친구들을 봄 방학을 어떻게 보낼까 계획을 세우느라 분주했어요. 제 친구들은 바닷가에 놀러 가겠다고 말하며 “캔 바다에 가자!”라고 저를 설득했지요. 제가 살아온 네브래스카는 추웠고, 저 또한 바다에 가고 싶었어요. 하지만 저는 바다에 가는 대신에 대학교에서 아주 특별한 전화번호부를 빌려 왔어요. 그 책은 미국과 캐나다에 있는 모든 미디어 관련 회사의 전화번호가 적혀있는 책이었죠. 저는 저의 봄방학 첫날을 그 책을 읽으며 보냈어요. 그리고 제 자신에게 물었죠. “나는 일을 하고 싶은가?” “나는 어디서 일을 할 수 있을까?” 다음 날부터 5일 동안 저는 전화번호부에 있는 이 회사들에게 전화를 돌리기 시작했어요. 저는 모든 메이저리그팀에게 전화를 걸었고, 메이저리그를 중계하는 모든 라디오와 텔레비전 방송국에 전화를 했지요. 저는 메이저리그팀들의 광고를 만드는 광고대행사에 전화했어요. 저는 모두에게 전화했고, 최고의 인턴십 기회를 얻고자 노력했어요. 저는 좋은 교육을 받았고, 젊었으며, 많은 경험과 기회를 가지고 있었으니까요. 더군다나 제 능력을 발전시키는데 도움을 주시는 교수님들도 곁에 계셨는 걸요. 저는 결국 메이저리그 두 팀으로부터 인턴십 제안을 받을 수 있었어요. 그리고 1998년의 여름을 세인트루이스 카디널스 구장과 더그아웃, 미디어 부스에서 보낼 수 있었죠. 저는 많은 유명 인사와 제 어린 시절의 우상들을 만났어요. 마법에 홀린 듯한 여름이었죠. 제가 만약 친구들과 바다에 갔더라면 이 마법의 여름을 보낼 수 있었을까요?
저는 당신에게 충고를 건네고 싶어요. “오, 나는 인턴십을 못해”라고 말하지 마세요. 물론 포기를 고려하기도 전에 당신은 여러 번 거절당할지도 몰라요. 하지만 당신은 자신이 해낼 수 있다는 사실을 믿어야만 해요. 당신은 한 번에 멋진 인턴십 기회를 갖지 못할 수도 있어요. 당신의 레벨에서 노력하세요. 예를 들면 저는 3개의 인턴십을 마치기 전엔 메이저리그의 문을 두드리지도 않았어요. 저는 NBC 스포츠에서 매일 마감 시간을 지켜냈어요. 대부분 매일 하나의 마감 시간을 지켜야 했는데, 어느 날엔 아주 중요한 두 개의 5시 마감 기사를 써야만 했어요. 저는 이 인턴십을 온 여름 동안 해냈는데, NBC는 나의 영웅 톰 브로코우가 일을 시작한 곳이었죠. 그 여름 동안 저는 주말 동안 마이너리그팀에서 다른 인턴십을 했어요. 그 전에는 광고에 관련된 인턴십도 했었고요. 이 모든 인턴십들은 아주 소소하게 시작되었지만 저는 저의 여름 내내 이것들을 해낼 수 있었어요. 당신이 아직 당신이 세운 인턴십 목표를 달성하지 못했다면 방학을 낭비하지 마세요. 대신 대전이나 당신이 사는 도시에서 인턴십을 체험해 보세요. 예를 들어 당신이 대전일보를 위해 글을 쓸 수 없다면 당신이 속한 커뮤니티와 대학교 클럽을 위해 할 수 있는 일들을 찾아보세요. 당신의 미래 고용자에게 당신이 얼마나 책임감이 있고, 마감 시간을 지키며, 당신의 능력을 발전시키기 위해 노력하는지를 보여주세요. 그럼 당신은 잘해낼 수 있을 겁니다.
Q : What is your dream right now?
Ken Morrison : It is a difficult question to answer what is my true dream. My dream is very similar to what my dream was when I was your age. I remember sitting on a baseball bench during my internship days on a very hot summer morning and writing down my life goals. I wrote down that I always wanted to be around new opportunities. I wanted to be in an opportunity where I am working with good people, where I have good technology, and I have the opportunity to learn every day. As I got older, I realized that I always want to be able to see the people that I help. I truly feel that my dream dream dream position is in a career field that’s not created yet. The world is changing so quickly. I do feel that I learn a lot every morning before any student sees me. I have already learned many things from very smart people through my iPod and podcasts and my readings, I feel like I am in a position where I usually have some idea about what is happening before the rest of the world knows about it. That might sound too confident, but I have created a great learning network of people who I truly respect.
So I am studying about the media and technology every single morning as well as marketing. I am not sure exactly what’s going to happen with my full dream. However, I always want to be around good people who I want to be able to help. I want to use my skills of media, mass communications, a little bit of psychology, and a little bit of technology, and to be able to mix all that together. That will allow me to always be able to do something which is close to my passion where I can help different people. I love teaching and I want to teach for a long time. I am glad to do that now and hopefully for a long time. I am sure that I will always be in an area where I am learning and teaching others in some way.
이한규 : 지금 교수님의 꿈은 무엇인가요?
캔 모리슨 : 나의 진정한 꿈이 무엇인지 답하는 건 정말 어렵네요. 제 꿈은 제가 어렸을 때 꿔왔던 꿈들과 매우 닮아있어요. 저는 인턴십을 하던 어느 더운 여름날 아침 야구장 벤치에 앉아 나의 인생 목표에 대해 써내려가던 날들을 기억해요. 저는 언제나 새로운 기회 속에 있길 바랐던 거 같아요. 저는 매일 새로운 걸 배우며, 좋은 기술과 좋은 사람들 사이에서 일할 수 있는 기회를 얻길 바라왔어요. 나이가 들고 나서 제가 도운 누군가를 바라볼 수 있기를 바랍니다. 저는 제가 진정으로 바라는 꿈이 아직 직업으로서 구현되지 않았다고 생각해요. 세상은 급격히 변화하고, 저는 매일 아침 새로운 것들을 배우는 걸요. 저는 이미 매일 독서와 팟캐스트로 많은 것들을 배우고 있어요. 제가 온전히 존중하는 사람들의 네트워크를 통해 아주 좋은 학습의 장을 만들어내고 있죠.
그래서 저는 매일 마케팅과 뉴 미디어 그리고 기술에 대해 공부하고 있어요. 저는 제 꿈이 어느 방향으로 나아갈지 모르지만, 제가 도움을 줄 수 있는 사람들과 관계 맺으며 살고 싶어요. 저는 제 미디어 활용 능력과, 매스컴 활용 능력, 조금의 심리학, 조금의 기술을 활용해 모든 지식을 한데 섞고 싶어요. 이러한 노력이 제가 다양한 사람들을 돕고자 하는 제 열정을 유지할 수 있겠죠. 저는 학생들을 가르치는 게 좋고, 더욱 오래 가르치고 싶어요. 어떤 의미에서 저는 언제까지나 누군가를 가르치고 배우며 살아갈 것 같네요.
Q : Do you think you achieved your dream?
Ken Morrison : I don't feel like most successful people ever feel like they have accomplished their dream. But I do feel like what I am doing is very closely related to my dream of always being able to use new technology to reach many people for mass media or mass communication. So yeah, I would say that it’s in line with my dream. Of course it is not exactly what I imagined, but this is something that I am really comfortable with at this stage of my fairly young career. I am happy, healthy, and I get to learn many things every week. But at this chapter in my life, I feel like I live something very close to my dreams that I had when I was in college. I always wanted to teach communications and media courses in a university, but I didn’t want to teach until I had valuable experiences to share with my students. I love that I get to use my lifelong skills, hobbies, and studies to help good young kids learn about the exciting field of media and mass communications. I like that Hannam is a Christian university and that I can teach good, hard-working students. Right now, I love that I get to teach my passion and I have lots of time to learn more about my field and about the exciting country of Korea. Some days are like a dream. That makes me happy.
이한규 : 교수님은 교수님의 꿈을 이루셨나요?
캔 모리슨 : 저는 대부분의 성공한 이들도 자신의 꿈을 이뤘다고 생각하지 않아요. 하지만 저는 새로운 기술로 많은 사람들과 소통할 수 있다는 점에서 제 꿈을 거의 이뤘다고 생각해요. 어떤 의미에선 제 꿈의 연장선에 있는 일들이었으니까요. 물론 제가 상상했던바 그대로는 아니지만 제 지금의 경력에서 보면 저는 어느 정도는 만족해요. 저는 행복하고, 건강하며, 매주 새로운 것들을 배우고 있죠. 지금 이 시점에서 저는 제가 대학생활에 꿈꿔왔던 내 꿈과 아주 가까이에 있다고 느껴요. 저는 제가 대학생일 때 항상 꿈꿔왔어요. 제가 충분한 경험이 있을 때 제 학생들에게 커뮤니케이션과 미디어에 관해 가르치길 말이지요. 저는 제가 겪어온 삶과 취미들 그리고 공부를 통해 젊은 학생들이 미디어 분야에 흥미를 느끼게끔 가르치는 게 행복해요. 저는 한남대학교가 기독교 학교라서, 멋지고 열심히 공부하는 학생들을 가르칠 수 있다는 사실에 감사하고요. 지금 저는 제 열정에 관련된 것들을 가르치고, 제 분야에 대해 새로운 것을 배울 수 있어요. 한국에서의 이 나날들이 어떤 때는 꿈처럼 느껴지기도 해요. 저는 지금 행복합니다.
