Q : How would you define ‘Journalism or New media technology’ in your own way?
Ken Morrison : In my own definition, I would say that new media allows anyone to be a student and allows anyone to be a teacher and a reporter. We can share the positive stories that are around us. That is so exciting for me. I grew up in a tiny town in the middle of Nebraska in the middle of the United States, Most people think that we are behind the times. I don't agree. However, I think that this misunderstanding is part of the reason why I am so motivated to learn a lot about technology. I know how powerful technology can be to help people learn. I know how powerful it is to help connect people who have similar career passions. I strongly feel that just because you are from 'the country', you don’t have to be one step or one day behind what people are doing in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, or Seoul. You don’t have to be one day behind. If you learn how to use new media, you can learn anything quickly and you can share the wonderful stories from Daejeon. There are wonderful stories from the middle of our countries. Yet, you have to be able to find, interesting, and passionate ways of sharing these stories. New media is allowing us to do the with very small amounts of money. That is exciting for me.

캔 모리슨 : 뉴 미디어를 통해 우리 모두는 학생이 될 수도 있고, 선생님이 될 수도 있어요. 우리는 우리 주변의 좋은 이야기들을 공유할 수 있는 리포터가 될 수도 있죠. 그 사실이 저는 정말 흥미롭다고 생각해요. 제 이야기를 하자면, 저는 미국 중부의 네브래스카라는 조그만 도시에서 자랐어요. 대부분의 주민들은 우리가 시대에 뒤처져 살고 있다고 생각했지만, 저는 동의할 수 없었죠. 그 사실에 대한 자각이 제가 새로운 기술들에 대해 능동적으로 받아들이게 된 계기가 되었던 것 같아요. 저는 기술이 얼마나 효과적으로 사람들의 배움을 도울 수 있는지에 대해 알고 있었어요. 그것들이 비슷한 직업적 열정을 가진 사람들을 이을 수 있다는 사실 또한 말이죠. 저는 당신이 단지 발전하지 못한 지역에서 자랐다는 이유만으로 당신 자신을 서울, 실리콘 배리, 샌프란시스코 사람들보다 뒤처지게 여긴다는 점에 대해 동의할 수 없어요. 당신은 그들에 비해 하루씩이나 뒤처질 필요가 없는 걸요. 만약 당신이 뉴 미디어를 어떻게 활용할 것인지를 배울 수 있다면, 당신은 무엇이든 쉽게 배울 수 있을 것이고, 대전의 훌륭한 이야기들을 다른 이들과 공유할 수 있을 겁니다. 대한민국의 중심인 이곳에는 멋진 이야기들이 많아요. 아직 당신은 흥미롭고 열정적으로 이 이야기들을 공유할 방법을 찾지 못했지만 말이에요. 뉴 미디어는 우리로 하여금 조금의 돈을 쓰면서 이 흥미진진한 이야기를 모두와 공유할 수 있게끔 해줍니다. 그게 제가 뉴 미디어를 연구하는 이유에요.
Q : Can you recommend specific tools of new media like Twitter, Facebook?
Ken Morrison : Those are the famous ones that everyone talks about and I agree that they can be very powerful. However, they can also be extremely dangerous ways of wasting your time as well. It is important to remember that the tools are going to change. I think that the powerful thing when learning new technologies is to learn how to use these tools for the right reasons and in the right ways. Twitter is wonderful. However, I think it is wonderful as a listening tool. For me, I don’t think of it as a good talking tool. Facebook, can be one of the most stupid things that you do in a day. It can also be very educational and rewarding. It all depends on who you follow and what you choose to pay attention to. It also matters a great deal on how much you interact with silly or smart things because Facebook pays attention to every click that you make. If you interact with garbage, it will feed you more garbage. If you interact with smart content, it will give you more smart content from your network. Facebook is a business and it wants you to stay on their site. Therefore, it is going to give you more of whatever you interact with. Be smart about what you click 'like' on. To me, it is interesting to see how Facebook is choosing to connect people, and the algorithms of how they choose to decide if Ken Morison will like what Lee Han Q wrote. Will he think it is interesting or should I leave it off of Ken's page. To me, that continually changing the game of Facebook PageRank is extremely interesting. But a good user knows that not everything they post is going to be seen by all of their friends and followers. The process of trying to understand this hidden mathematical formula by Facebook's computers is extremely interesting to me.
Sorry, your original question about tools… I also like ‘Scoop. it’ and ‘Paper. Li’. Paper.li takes everything from everyone who you follow on Twitter and it takes only their most interesting things. Then it makes a nice digital 'paper' for you. So it is the best of the best content from the best people that you follow. That is really interesting to me. Every day, I have about three Paper.li publications that I subscribe to. I have one that I have done automatically for me. It is the best information from the people who I choose to follow. It is called "Follow The Leaders" and you can find it here. Another one is only from great teachers around the world and what they are doing. Another one is more technology-based. Then I have a last one that is just a little bit of everything. But I don’t have time to follow all the smart people in the world. I wish I did, but I don’t. Paper.li helps me get a nice look quickly and it is summarized and organized based on what other people have already found interesting. For example, Both Richard Branson and Ken Robinson influence many people. However, if one day Richard Branson shares something to his followers and few people care, Paper.li will assume that I won't care either. So it is a personalized newspaper but it is already filtered by the public. I think it is a cool evolution of the way that we get 'news'.
이한규 : 트위터나 페이스북 같은 뉴 미디어 플랫폼을 추천해주실 수 있으신가요?
캔 모리슨 : 제가 앞으로 언급할 플랫폼들은 모두가 말하는 영향력이 큰 플랫폼들이에요. 하지만 그 영향력만큼이나 당신의 시간을 소비케 한다는 점에서 위험하기도 하지요. 당신이 사용하는 플랫폼들이 당신을 바꿀 수 있다는 점을 기억하고 있어야 해요. 저는 이런 플랫폼들을 올바른 이유와 방법으로 사용하는 것을 배우는 게 정말 중요하다고 생각해요. 예를 들면, 트위터는 대단한 플랫폼이죠. 하지만 트위터가 대단할 수 있는 건, 그것을 타인의 이야기를 구독하는 용도로만 사용했을 때에만 적용돼요. 저에게 트위터는 무언가 이야기를 하는 플랫폼이 아니거든요. 페이스북을 한다는 건, 당신이 하루 동안 한 일 중 가장 멍청한 일이 될 수도 있어요. 물론 페이스북은 아주 교육적이지만, 그건 당신이 누구를 구독하고, 누구의 소식을 집중해서 들을 것이냐에 달린 것이지요. 또한 그것은 당신이 어떤 것에 관심을 기울이냐 또한 중요해요. 페이스북은 당신의 모든 클릭을 파악하고 있기 때문에, 당신이 질 낮은 콘텐츠에 호응을 하면, 그런 콘텐츠들을 당신의 타임라인에 배달하거든요. 당신이 좋은 정보에 좋아요를 누르거나 댓글을 달아야, 페이스북은 당신에게 더 질이 좋은 콘텐츠들을 보여준답니다. 페이스북은 하나의 비즈니스고 당신이 더욱 오래 페이스북에 머물길 원하기에, 당신이 관심을 가지고 있는 것을 더 보여주는 것뿐이에요. 어떤 포스트에 좋아요를 누를지에 대해 심사숙고해서 결정하세요. 저는 페이스북이 어떤 방식으로 사람들을 연결하고, 제가 이한규 학생의 포스트를 볼 수 있게 하는지에 대한 알고리즘이 정말 흥미롭다고 생각해요. 페이스북 페이지 랭크가 계속해서 바뀌는 점 또한 흥미롭고요. 몇 똑똑한 페이스북 유저들은 자신들이 쓴 포스트가 친구 모두와 구독자들에게 보이지지 않는다는 사실을 알고 있을 거에요. 이런 숨겨진 페이스북의 알고리즘을 이해하는 과정이 제게는 정말 재미있네요.
아, 말해달라고 했던 게 플랫폼에 관한 이야기였죠, 미안해요. 저는 스쿱잇과 페이퍼리를 좋아해요. 페이퍼리는 당신이 트위터에서 구독한 모든 이들의 흥미로운 글들을 가져올 수 있어요. 그리고 페이퍼리를 통해 디지털 발행물을 만들 수 있죠. 그 말인즉슨, 당신이 구독한 가장 훌륭한 사람들의 가장 훌륭한 콘텐츠로 발행물을 만들 수 있다는 거에요. 저는 매일 제가 구독한 정보들로 대략 세 편의 페이퍼리 발행해요. 첫 번째는 "리더를 구독하라"라는 발행물로 제가 구독한 리더들의 좋은 정보들에 관한 것이지요. 두 번째는 세계의 훌륭한 교사들과 그들이 하고 있는 일들에 관한 이야기를 다루고 있어요. 또 다른 발행물은 기술과 밀접한 연관성을 가지고 있어요. 그리고 마지막 발행물은 이 모든 주제에 대해 조금씩 관련이 있는 발행물이네요. 저는 세계의 모든 석학들을 구독할 시간이 없어요. 그래 왔기를 바라지만, 그렇지 못하고 있지요. 페이퍼리는 다른 유저들이 이미 만들어 놓은 발행물을 바탕으로 제가 빠르게 그들의 정보를 구독할 수 있게 도와줘요. 예를 들면 리처드 브랜슨과 캔 로빈슨이라는 두 가상 인물이 많은 사람에게 영향을 주고 있다고 했을 때, 리처드가 소수만이 관심 갖는 이야기를 공유한다면, 페이퍼리는 그 발행물에는 관심을 두지 않죠. 이처럼 페이퍼리를 통해 발행되는 개인 발행물들은 이미 대중에 의해 필터링을 거친 전문화된 발행물이에요. 제가 보기에 페이퍼리는 우리가 새로운 소식을 접하는 아주 멋진 신문의 혁명이라고 생각합니다.
Q : Do you apply your experiences that you mentioned, and knowledge that you learned to the campus?
Ken Morrison : I think that people who know me well know that I spend a lot of extra time learning from some of what the smartest CEOs and thought leaders are doing. Any time that there is anything that they are willing to share with the public, I jump on it and try to learn from it. I am taking a class from Howard Rheingold right now. He is a Stanford professor who has been writing books for about twenty years about what the future would look like. I have contact with him every day. He is interested about what is happening in South Korean classrooms and what is happening in my classrooms. I love the fact that I can connect with these very smart people without leaving my apartment or office.. Rheingold's mentor is Steward Brand and I love learning from him as well. I love to read from the smartest people on earth that are applying the things that I teach and I like to bring those into my classroom. John Jantsch is another person as well as C.C. Chapman. I love interacting with them even though it is very small interactions. Yet, my students know who these people are and they have a lot of respect for these people. Chris Brogan and I had small interactions online during the last two days and I love that famous people are willing to help me be a great professor. I feel like I am an example to my students that if they are brave enough to respectfully reach out for someone’s advice, many time experts are willing to give you two minutes or two hours or two weeks. Yes I love taking this new knowledge and sharing it with students.
이한규 : 교수님은 교수님이 말씀하셨던 경험과 지식을 학교에 적용하고 계신가요?
캔 모리슨 : 저를 잘 아는 이들은, 제가 CEO와 리더들에게서 많은 것을 배우는 데 시간을 투자하고 있다는 걸 알고 있을 거에요. 언제든지 리더들이 대중과 무언가를 공유할 때면, 저는 그걸 통해 배우려고 노력하거든요. 저는 요즘 하워드 레인골드의 강의를 듣고 있어요. 그는 스탠퍼드 대학의 교수로서 20년 후의 미래에 대해 글을 써온 학자지요. 저는 그와 매일 연락을 주고받는데, 그는 한국의 교실 혹은 제가 LGC에서 학생들을 가르치는 이 교실에 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지를 궁금해하고 있어요. 저는 이렇듯 집과 사무실을 떠나지 않고도 이렇게 멋진 사람들과 소통을 나눌 수 있는 게 정말 좋습니다. 저는 하워드의 스승인 스튜어드 브랜드를 통해 배우는 것 또한 좋아하고, 이 세상의 석학들이 쓴 글들을 읽고 제 수업에 그것들을 적용하는 것을 좋아합니다. 존 잰스치와 C.C. 챕맨 또한 제 스승들이고, 저는 그들과 소통합니다. 비록 그 소통이 아주 사소한 상호 교류라고 할지라도요. 제 학생들은 이들이 누군지 알고, 이들을 아주 존중해주죠. 저는 요 이틀 동안 크리스 브로건과 연락을 주고받았어요. 이런 멋진 인물이 제가 더 훌륭한 교수가 되게끔 해주는 것에 감사합니다. 저는 제가 하나의 예가 될 수 있다고 생각해요. 학생들이 용기를 가지고, 예의 바르게 누군가의 조언을 요청한다면, 대부분의 전문가가 2분 혹은 2시간 심지어는 2주의 시간을 내서라도 학생들에게 좋은 조언을 해줄 거에요. 저는 이러한 사실을, 더 나아가 새로운 지식을 학생들과 나누고 싶습니다.
Q : How would define LGC in your own way?
Ken Morrison : What I think is great about Linton Global College is that it is an amazing opportunity for students to have a second chance at finding something that they are good at and showing their skill in a second language. The students who really buy into this system can leave here with nine letters of recommendations from professors around the world.That is definitely not common in Korea. Usually, students have to spend a lot of their parents’ money and a lot of their personal time to travel the world to get nine letters of recommendations. LGC provides a taste of a study-abroad experience without leaving Korea. If students spent all their money to go the US for a semester, that would not be enough time for the professor to truly know the student. So it is actually hard to get even one sincere and meaningful letter of recommendation if you just visit another university for a semester or two. I think LGC is a great opportunity for students to find their focus. Maybe they didn't get into their top top university that they originally wanted to enter. However, if they tell themselves, ‘this is where I am. This is where I will shine’, they can do great things. If they look around and they see the opportunities that they have and make the most out of it, they can do a great job in a second language (and in their first language) finding their focus, making great relationships, and being very marketable in a way that is very different than most of the country at most of the world.
이한규 : 교수님에게 린튼 글로벌 칼리지란 무엇인가요?
캔 모리슨 : 제가 린튼 글로벌 칼리지에 대해 좋게 생각하는 점은 린튼 글로벌 칼리지가 학생들에게 엄청난 기회를 준다는 거에요. 학생들은 제2언어인 영어로, 그들이 잘하는 것을 찾고, 그들의 능력을 보여줄 기회를 얻게 되죠. 린튼 글로벌 칼리지에 들어오는 학생들은 전 세계에서 온 9명의 교수로부터 추천서를 얻을 수도 있어요. 이건 분명 대한민국에서 흔치 않은 기회일 거예요. 보통 학생들이 9장의 추천서를 얻기 위해선 부모님의 엄청난 돈을 쓰고 자기 자신의 시간을 투자해서 세계를 돌아다녀야 하니까요. 린튼 글로벌 칼리지는 한국에서 외국 유학의 경험을 제공해요. 만약 학생들이 자신의 돈을 모두 써 미국에서 한 학기를 보낸다고 했을 때, 미국의 교수가 그 학생을 온전히 이해하는데, 한 학기라는 시간이 충분할까요? 자 이제, 타국의 대학교에서 한두 학기를 보낸다고 해도 의미가 담긴 추천서를 받는다는 게 얼마나 어려운지 아시겠지요. 린튼 글로벌 칼리지는 또한, 학생들로 하여금 자신이 좋아하는 것을 찾게끔 기회를 줘요. 아마도 학생들은 자신이 원하던 한국의 명문 대학에 들어가지 못했을 거에요. 하지만 학생들이 자기 자신에게 '여기가 내가 있는 곳이고, 여기가 내가 빛날 곳이야.' 라고 말할 수 있다면 그들은 정말 멋진 일들을 해낼 수 있을 거에요. 단지 주위를 둘러보고 기회를 찾아낼 수 있다면, 학생들은 영어로 훌륭한 일들을 해내고, 자신들이 좋아하는 것을 찾아낼 수 있으며, 좋은 관계를 만들 수 있어요. 그리고 이것들은 이 세상 대부분의 국가에서 시장성 있는 인재가 갖춰야 할 요건들이죠.
Q : Can you say something to LGC students who want to be a great journalist?
Ken Morrison : Before you can be a global leader you have to be a leader of your neighborhood and a leader among your friends. Before you can be a global journalist you have to be good at telling the stories that happen every day in your neighborhood or on campus. Some days are not exciting and some days are very exciting. However, if you have five boring days in a row, you are probably not looking at your life and community in the right way. There are amazing stories around every one of us every day. The best way that you become a great journalist is to start uncovering those stories by asking people to tell you when they have stories and then write about those stories. Also, find ways to create stories or media with your own unique creative twist. It must still be true, but make it interesting. Students who are motivated to do this can get very good at it. If they come to our university and they choose to do that for two, three, or four years, they are going to be really good after four years. For example, what you (Hangyu Lee) are doing by spending your break to activate what you have learned during 15 weeks of the semester is great. That is exactly what students should try to be doing. They may take some time before they reach your level. Yet, in two weeks, they can be at a higher level than they are today if they just start uncovering the beautiful or important stories around them. Korea is a beautiful country and there are many great stories that should and could be shared with the world if they told in an interesting global way in the English language. However, if you wait for everyone to come and learn Korean language to cover these stories, it is going to take a long long long time. Many of those stories will go untold and be lost forever! But LGC students have both languages and they are learning how to be great story tellers and great reporters. They can be the ones who really share some of the positive stories. Daejeon is an exciting city. Hannam is a beautiful place to uncover the stories. That can be an amazing start to becoming a great journalist. But you have to have that energetic spirit to go and uncover these stories! If you don't tell them, who will?
이한규 : 멋진 저널리스트가 되길 원하는 린튼 글로벌 칼리지 학생들에게 해주고 싶으신 말이 있나요?
캔 모리슨 : 당신은 세계적인 리더가 되기 이전에 당신 주변의 친구들과 이웃들에게 훌륭한 리더가 되어야 합니다. 또한 당신은 세계적인 저널리스트가 되기 이전에 당신 주변의 이웃과 캠퍼스의 일상을 누구에게나 공감 가는 글로 표현할 줄 알아야 하죠. 어떤 날은 흥미로운 기삿거리가 많지만, 어떤 날은 무미건조한 일상이 반복될 수도 있습니다. 하지만 당신이 지루한 5일을 한 줄로 나열한다면, 그건 아마 당신이 당신의 일상과 커뮤니티를 제대로 보지 못하고 있는 걸 겁니다. 우리 모두 각자는 매일 엄청난 이야기를 품고 살아갑니다. 당신이 멋진 저널리스트로 거듭날 수 있는 가장 좋은 방법은, 이 이야기를 발굴해내고 사람들에게 들려주는 것입니다. 또한 이 이야기들을 당신만의 느낌으로 되살려내는 것입니다. 이야기의 본질은 그대로 두되 더욱 흥미로운 구성으로 만드는 거죠. 이러한 기사 발굴작업을 열정적으로 해나가는 학생들은 대부분 잘해나갈 수 있습니다. 만약 학생들이 린튼 글로벌 칼리지에 와서 이러한 작업을 2년, 3년, 혹은 4년 간 하겠다고 정한다면, 4년 뒤에 학생들은 멋진 저널리스트로서 발돋움 할 수 있을 겁니다. 이한규 학생이 한 학기, 15주 동안 배운 것을 방학 기간 동안 행동에 옮기는 것도 좋은 예가 될 수 있겠지요. 이것들은 학생들이 꼭 해야 하는 것들입니다. 학생들은 시간을 투자해 자신들의 레벨을 높여야 합니다. 단 2주라도 학생들 주변의 멋지고 훌륭한 이야기들을 발굴해낼 수 있다면, 학생들은 지금 이 순간 보다도 한 레벨 발전해 있을 겁니다. 대한민국은 멋진 나라이고, 아주 재미있는 이야기들이 많습니다. 이 이야기들은 세계와 영어로 공유되어야만 하는 이야기들이지요. 하지만 다른 사람들이 한국에 와서 한국어를 배우고 이 이야기들을 알 때까지 기다린다면, 분명 아주 긴 시간이 걸릴 것 같지 않나요? 아마 대부분의 재미있는 이야기들이 누구에게도 들려지지 않은 채 사장될 게 뻔합니다. 린튼 글로벌 칼리지 학생들은 두 언어를 사용할 수 있으며 훌륭한 이야기꾼이 되는 방법을 배워나갑니다. LGC 학생들은 이런 긍정적인 이야기들을 모두와 함께 공유할 수 있지요. 또한 대전은 아주 흥미로운 도시입니다. 한남대학교는 이런 이야기들을 풀어내기에 아주 적합한 학교이고요. 이러한 조그만 시작이 멋진 저널리스트가 되기 위한 첫걸음이 될 것입니다. 물론 당신은 아주 열정적인 영혼으로 이 이야기들을 풀어내야 합니다. 당신이 하지 않는다면, 누가 할 수 있을까요?
