0. Daejeon

0. 대전

Q : Can you introduce yourself briefly?

Ken Morrison : My name is Ken Morrison, I’m an assistant professor at Linton global college. I have lived in Daejeon for four years and I’m from Nebraska, which is in the middle of the USA.

Q : How's life in Daejeon?

Ken Morrison : I like Daejeon. I like that it is clean and has several new parts. I really like that I can be in the middle of an exciting city but still get out to nature quite quickly. I love that I can travel easily to other cities if I choose. Yet, I generally stay in Daejeon.

Q : Where are the best places to go in Daejeon?

Ken Morrison : I like to explore different parts of the city and I really like my bike route following the different rivers to new parts of the city. I like Kung dong. I also like jungmin doing. When I first moved to Daejeon, I lived near city hall, so that area always feels comfortable to me. I should make more time to watch the Hanwha Eagles play. I love that I am just a short taxi ride away from a KBO team.

Q : Compare with your home or other cities what is the unique thing about Daejeon?

Ken Morrison :  I grew up in a tiny town in the USA so there are not many comparisons. I do feel that because Daejeon does not have a military base, it has a distinct feel among the international community. I feel that the inexpensive transportation, simple subway routes and friendly bike paths make Daejeon a good place for someone who has not lived in Asia before.

1. JOB

1. 직업

Q: You are an assistant Professor at Linton Global College, what do you teach?

Ken Morrison : I teach new media classes in the Global Communications and Culture department. New media are basically SMS. We focus on some of the tools that computers use for reaching large audiences. However, that is not enough. We also study the psychology, marketing and the techniques of how doing an effective job at designing the right message in the right way at the right time. I teach several classes regarding media, video & organizational communications.

Q : I heard that you used to work at Cable One Advertising in USA, what did you do and what did you learn during that working period?

Ken Morrison : Cable one was a wonderful opportunity for me. We were owned by the Washington Post. So it was nice to be part of a large corporation. Regarding what I did at Cable One. We had a sales team. As soon as a business said they wanted to do television advertising, I would go and meet with the clients. I would find out the history of the organization and their goals for the future. Next, we would find out goals for their specific advertising campaign, and I would just ask many questions and we would have a good conversation. Then I would go back to the office and I would write a script. Sometimes we planned a campaign of one or two or three or five commercials and then I would go back and we have an advertising pitch where I tried to get them to want to accept my ideas. Sometimes they would say yes and sometimes we would make small changes or big changes. We just did whatever was needed. After we agreed on the goals and the scripts, then I would make a storyboard and shoot the commercial. After that, me and my team would go and edit the commercial and later we would take the finished commercial out to the client for approval. After the client said they liked it, I actually also took care of computers and satellites to make sure that the commercial was broadcast at the correct times. So of course all of that is part of the team, but I was involved with every step from the very beginning until we got approval the commercial and then finally to make sure that the commercials ran on ESPN, CNN, and other major channels. So it was a very good opportunity to manage a lot of responsibility in my very first job out of university.  I grew a lot due to these experiences. It was very stressful, but I’m very thankful for my seven years at Cable One.

Q : Is it a similar job with sports reporter at the local newspaper? “The Howells Journal”

Ken Morrison : No, Sport reporting is significantly different. It was definitely a small town, small newspaper and for that I was simply reporting about the high school basketball, baseball and football games. I primarily covered basketball and baseball. For that, I just went to the games, cover the sports action and take notes. After the game, I would talk to the coach and maybe talk to the star players. I liked writing so it was somewhat easy for me to just write those stories up. That was very good for me because I think I started when I was sixteen years old. It was very good for me to have a deadline every single week and it was also good because I knew people were reading what I was writing so I had public exposure right away. It was kind of strange because I was just a young kid and I was writing about the older students in our school. Usually football players are big and strong. So I had to make sure I did an accurate job writing about them. Occasionally, they might play terrible but I was the one who had to write about them playing terrible. That was not fun for me as a younger kid in the school. But of course I didn’t have to do that too many times because our players were good and our teams have usually been good. But that was a lot of responsibility as a young person. Therefore, I would say that those experiences made my high school life a little bit different than most people when they were freshman and sophomore in high school.

Q : When I took your class last year, you told me that many people are willing to help young and talented people. Do you think that you got that opportunity because you were young and talented?

Ken Morrison : Sure. I do think that it is pretty universal. Maybe not everybody is willing to help young people, But I think in most cultures, people are willing to help a young person if the young person is polite, if they show their hard working and they show they want to learn and they have a good attitude, I think a lot of people will try to give them advice and maybe help them get the experience. Also, with the new technology that has advanced since I was young, you don’t have to wait for an editor's approval for you to start creating media or to be writing. I do think that when I was young, I was lucky because I had teachers who helped me, I have some unique opportunities, and good people around me. Also, because they could see that I was polite and that I wanted to learn, they invested in me. They saw that I was hard working and that I could meet the deadlines so they were willing to give me more chances. And I think that opportunity still exists for a lot of people. But you have to pursue those opportunities. They don't just come to you.
