Q : When did you get interested in education? And why?
Ken Morrison : The first time I got really serious about education was when I was in college. My two favorite college professors were just extremely passionate about what they did. Both of them were successful broadcasters outside of the classroom. They taught us the basic concepts well. But more importantly, they really cared about helping us understand that media can be important, fun and an exciting field. I should also say that a high school teacher played a part. She didn't make me want to be a teacher but she made me be a better person. Her name is Mrs. Touil. She was a very busy woman. She was a full time librarian, full time teacher, and she had maybe one hour of free time a day. She decided to use that free hour to make a class for me. She got permission for me to get a credit and so there was just one teacher and one student in that class during my teachers one free hour. I just thought, “Wow! Good teachers are very special people.” She didn't make me want to be a teacher but she sure made me be a good person.
이한규 : 언제부터 교육에 관심을 두게 되셨나요?
캔 모리슨 : 처음으로 교육에 진지하게 관심을 갖게 된 건 대학생 때입니다. 제가 가장 존경하던 두 분의 교수님이 교육에 엄청난 관심이 있으셨어요. 두 분 다 학교 밖에서는 성공한 방송인이셨습니다. 교수님들은 학생들에게 기본 개념을 확실히 이해시켜주셨을 뿐만 아니라 미디어가 얼마나 재미있고 흥미로우며 중요한 분야인지에 대해 알게 해주셨죠. 아, 고등학교 때 선생님도 언급하지 않고 넘어갈 수가 없습니다. 그녀는 미스 투일Touil인데, 저를 한 뼘 더 훌륭한 사람으로 만들어주신 분입니다. 사실 투일 선생님은 정말 바쁜 분이셨어요. 그녀는 매일 도서관에서 살았고, 항상 선생님으로서 매시간을 쪼개 살고 계셨죠. 아마 하루에 한 시간 정도밖에 여유 시간이 없는 분이었을 겁니다. 그런데 그녀가 그 한 시간을 제게 쓰기로 하셨어요. 투일 선생님은 하루 한 시간 동안 일대일로 수업을 진행하셨고, 심지어는 학점까지 얻을 수 있게 만드셨지요. 저는 그때 생각했습니다. "와, 멋진 선생님이라는 건 정말 특별한 사람들이구나." 투일 선생님은 제가 선생이 되기를 원치 않으셨을는지도 모릅니다. 다만 더 좋은 사람으로 만들고 싶으셨던 거죠.
Q : Is it different education in the USA and global education?
Ken Morrison : Sure, It's always dangerous to make a generic comparison between two countries when there are so many good things about both. Especially as a foreigner, I don't want to make it sound like I think one is better than another. There are many many things that I like about both countries. Sometimes I think that Korea is way way way way better. Sometimes I think that parts of the US education system are top top top. And of course every other country in the world has things that we should consider. So, after four years of teaching in Korea, I think that the US education system is very good at making the top half of their students want to learn from the rest of their life. I think that the Korean education system is really good at making the top half of their students learn a lot in eighteen years. Also, I think those are the two best things of both and if we could find a combination between those two and of course everywhere else in the world, we could have a wonderful Universal education system. When I came to Korea I was always surprised that how many people would say "Why do you read so much? You already have a good job. Why are you reading so much?" For me, that was real culture shock. Some other foreigners feel the same way as me. Other foreigners have told me that they are surprised that we have so many smart people in Korea. Yet, once many of them are done with college, they don't want to see another book for the rest of their life. I don't think the US education system has that effect. Please also remember that is hard and dangerous to compare two countries as big as these two countries because there are so many different types of people within both countries.
이한규 : 미국에서의 교육과 국제(한국에서의) 교육의 차이점이 있나요?
캔 모리슨 : 물론이죠. 다만 두 나라가 각각의 장점을 지니고 있는데, 일반화해서 비교를 한다는 게 어렵다는 걸 알아주셨으면 합니다. 특히 외국인의 처지에서 어느 한 곳의 교육 체계가 다른 한 곳보다 좋다고 말할 수 없으니까요. 사실 두 나라 각각의 장점이 있다고 생각합니다. 때로는 한국 교육이 훨씬 뛰어난 것처럼 보이다가도, 미국 교육의 어느 부분이 정말 훌륭하게 느껴질 때도 있거든요. 물론 각각의 나라들이 가지고 있는 특징을 생각해야만 하겠지요. 한국에서 4년간 교육을 하고 나서 느낀 점은, 절반의 훌륭한 학생을 만들어내고 그들이 남은 일생 동안 배움을 추구하며 살아가게 하는 게 미국의 교육이라면, 한국은 절반의 훌륭한 학생들을 만들어 내 18년 동안 정말로 많은 걸 배울 기회를 주는 것 같아요. 이 두 장점을 결합할 수 있다면 정말 훌륭한 교육 체계를 확립할 수 있지 않을까 하는 생각을 합니다. 한국에 처음 왔을 때 깜짝 놀랐던 건, 사람들이 "당신은 직업도 있고 바쁜 사람인데, 어떻게 그렇게 책을 많이 읽을 수 있나요?"라고 묻는 거였습니다. 제게 그건 어떤 의미에서 문화 충격으로 다가왔거든요. 주변의 다른 외국인들도 비슷한 이야기를 하곤 합니다. 외국인 친구들이 말하길 한국에는 정말 머리 좋은 사람들이 많은데, 그들이 대학을 졸업하고 나면 더 이상 책을 읽지 않으려고 하더군요. 사실 저는 미국 교육만이 그런 효과를 만들 수 있다고 생각하지는 않습니다. 두 나라가 매우 다른 사회 구성원과 문화로 이루어졌기 때문에 그것들을 일반화해서 비교한다는 게 어려운 일이란 거, 이해해 주셨으면 합니다.
Q : Why did you become more interested in global education?
Ken Morrison : When I was getting my master's degree we had students all over the world and that really opened my eyes. I managed a team of graduate assistant students from all over the world. We managed the computers and software for helping future US teachers learn how to use technology wisely in the classroom. I enjoyed managing this team of interesting graduate students. We shared many ideas about the future of education. And so I was actually pretty old when I started thinking about international education. When I started seeing the same people from all over the world at the library, and forming close relationships through church, through basketball leagues, and simply by living in the same area, I just started thinking 'wow this world is too small for me to spend all my life in one place'. I love the middle of the Midwest of the USA, but I wanted to explore. During my second year, I got a scholarship where I could go anywhere in the world, so I came to Korea and Chiang Mai, Thailand, where I studied educational systems in those two countries. In Thailand, I was able to help lead a project that was funded by the Queen of Thailand. We studied both the poorest schools in the country as well as the wealthiest school in the country where only the rich and powerful send their children. These were both great experiences.
이한규 : 왜 국제 교육에 관심을 두게 되셨나요?
캔 모리슨 : 석사 학위를 이수하고 있을 당시 학교에 많은 외국인 친구들이 있었습니다. 그들이 제 눈을 열어주었죠(웃음). 저는 외국 각지에서 온 친구들과 팀을 만들었습니다. 우리는 미래의 미국 선생님들이 교실에서 효과적으로 기술을 이용하게 하기 위해 컴퓨터 소프트웨어를 제작했지요. 저는 이 팀 활동이 무척이나 즐거웠습니다. 우리는 많은 미래 교육에 관해 많은 생각을 공유할 수 있었지요. 사실 제가 국제 교육에 관심을 두게 된 건 조금 더 나이가 들어서입니다. 도서관에서 같은 사람들을 만나고, 교회에서, 농구 경기장에서 혹은 그저 같은 지역에서 친밀한 관계를 맺으며 사람들을 만나게 되면서 이런 생각을 했어요. "아, 한 곳에서 내 인생을 보내기에 이 세상은 너무나도 좁구나." 물론 저는 미국 중서부를 사랑합니다, 하지만 탐험을 하고 싶었지요. 2학년 때 저는 장학금을 받아 외국으로 나갈 수 있었어요, 그래서 한국과 태국으로 가서 교육 체계에 관해서 공부할 수 있었죠. 태국에서는 태국의 여왕이 투자한 프로젝트에 참여할 수 있었습니다. 우리는 가장 가난한 아이들이 다니는 학교와 부자 아이들이 다니는 학교에서 공부할 수 있었는데, 정말 좋은 경험이었던 거 같아요.
Q : Why did you choose Korea?
Ken Morrison : The primary reason why I chose the two countries was because of the people leading the programs. I chose the countries. Yet, before I chose the countries, I chose my two favorite professors. Prof. Scott Waters was taking people to Korea and Prof. Dusti Howell was taking people to Thailand. I had other professors who I loved learning from, but those were the two who were taking students around the world that summer. I told myself, "I want to go to countries that I love but I also want to spend time with professors who I respect." Thankfully I knew a lot about Korea and had lots of friends here, so I was excited to come to Korea. I didn't know much about Thailand and that was a great surprise. But I chose Korea half for the professor and half because I wanted to learn about the small country where so many of my good friends came from.
이한규 : 왜 한국을 선택하셨나요?
캔 모리슨 : 태국과 한국을 선택한 가장 큰 이유는 사람들을 이끄는 프로그램 때문이었습니다. 사실 저는 나라를 선택하기 이전에 두 명의 교수님을 선택했다고 보는 게 맞을 거에요. 스콧 워터스Scott Waters 교수는 한국에 관해 이야기해주셨고, 더스티 하월Dusti Howell 교수는 태국에 관해 이야기해주셨지요. 물론 저는 다른 교수분들도 좋아했지만, 그 여름에 외국의 교육에 관해 말했던 이는 그 두 교수님이었어요(웃음). 그때의 저는 혼자서 되뇌었어요. "나는 외국으로 나가고 싶지만, 동시에 내가 존경하는 교수님들과 시간을 함께 보내고 싶다."라고요. 감사하게도, 저는 한국에 관해 많이 알고 있었고 몇몇 친구도 있었어요. 그래서 한국에 오는 것이 즐거웠습니다. 사실 태국에 관해서는 아는 게 많지 않아서 놀란 게 사실이에요. 제가 한국을 선택한 이유의 절반은 교수님일 테고, 절반은 훌륭한 친구들이 많은 이 조그만 나라를 알고고싶어서였을 겁니다.
