4월 9일, 테미예술창작센터에서 열린 2017 프리뷰 전시를 방문했습니다. 지금껏 많은 전시회를 다녔지만, 레지던시(예술가의 창작활동을 지원하는 것) 전시는 가본 적이 없었기 때문에, 이번에 어떤 전시일지 예상할 수 없었습니다.
On April 9, I visited the 2017 Preview: Artist Residency at TEMI Park. I have been to many exhibitions before, but did not know what to expect this time since I had never been to a residency exhibition.
전시회장에 들어서자 아주 아름다운 작품을 볼 수 있었는데요. 마주친 작품들로부터 영감을 얻어가며 갤러리를 누비고 다녔습니다. 갤러리를 나오자 안내원이 2층에서 레지던트 전시가 있을 것이라고 설명해줬습니다. 레지전시 전시를 방문한 적이 없어서 어떤 전시일지 안그려지더라고요.
As I entered the exhibition, I could see some very beautiful work. I made way way around the gallery, inspired by each and every piece that I saw. As I left the gallery, an attendant explained that there would be a residency exhibition at 11 on the second floor. Having never been to a residency exhibition, I didn't know what to expect.
저는 약 5분간 레지던시 전시가 열리기를 기다렸는데요. 어떤 전시일지 궁금했어요. 저는 1층의 갤러리와 비슷할 것이라고 상상했습니다.
I waited for the residency exhibition to open for about 5 minutes. I wondered what it would be like, I imagined that it would be similar to the gallery on the first floor.
레지던시 전시가 열려 위층으로 올라갔을 때, 몇개의 작은 갤러리들이 눈에 들어왔는데요. 것이 예술가들 작품의 예고편이라는 것을 알았습니다.
As the residency exhibition opened and I went upstairs, I saw what seemed to be a number of small galleries. I found out that this was a preview of the artists work.
제가 본 곳이 예술가를 위한 오픈스튜디오였더라고요. 예술가는 스튜디오에 살며, 창작활동을 하는데 시간을 쏟습니다.제가 방문했던 첫번째 예술가는 이예슬 씨였습니다. 그녀의 화려한 초현실적인 작품들은 경외심을 불러일으키고 눈을 사로잡은 첫번째 작품이었습니다. 방 주위를 둘러보니, 책상과 침대가 보였습니다. 예술가들이 가끔 대학생들처럼 생활한다는 사실을 알고는 흥미로웠습니다.
It turned out that each door that I saw was a studio for an artist. The artist lives in the studio, where they can spend time developing their work . The first artist that I visited was Li Setpyul. Her colorful surreal works are awe inspiring and the first things that drew my eye. As I looked around the room, I could see a desk and a bed. It's interesting to discover that sometimes artists live like university students.
그 다음은 프랑스 예술가 니콜라스 마넨티와 마났습니다. 그의 벽에 그려진 흥미로운 벽화들을 발견했는데요. 작가가 자신의 친구와 함께 진행했던 프로젝트였습니다. 그는 친절한 사람이었는데요. 레지던시 프로그램에 대해 설명해줬습니다. 레지던시 프로그램은 한국과 전 세계의 예술가들이 일정 기간동안 대전에 살며 작품활동을 하는 멋진 프로그램인데요. 전시 관람객들이 예술가들과 만나는 것을 진정으로 즐기는 것처럼 보였습니다.
The next artist I visited was Nicolas Manenti, from France. I noticed some interesting silkscreen work on his wall, which turned out to be a project that he worked on with a friend of mine. He was a nice gentleman and explained the residency program to me. It's a wonderful program, which brings artists from around Korea and the world to live and work in Daejeon for a period of time. The exhibition visitors appeared to really enjoy meeting the artists.

이번 프리뷰 전시는 몇 시간 동안 일요일 오후를 잘 보낼 수 있는 환상적인 방법이었습니다. 이번 주말은 오픈스튜디오였기 때문에 특별했습니다. 오픈스튜디오는 예술가들을 만나고 레지던시가 무언인지에 대해 배울 수 있는 좋은 기회였습니다. 앞으로 미래에 열릴 전시도 기대됩니다.
The 2017 Preview: Artist Residency TEMI was a fantastic way to spend a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon. This weekend was unique, as it was an open studio event. The open studio was a great way to meet artists and learn more about what a residency is. I look forward to visiting future events.
