[외국인소셜기자]노을빛 바라보며 수제 맥주! 랜치 브루어리

2010년 1월 남편과 다시 대전에 돌아왔을 때, 맥주는 그다지 매력적이지 않았습니다. 한국 맥주가 어디에나 있긴 했지만, 그 외의 맥주는 찾기 어려웠습니다. 그러다보니 자연스럽게 남편은 미국에 있을 적 취미였던 수제 맥주 양조를 아파트에서 하기 시작했는데요. 향이 강했고, 축축했으며 만들어진 맥주를 아파트 방마다 가득 채워놓곤 했습니다. 그래도 우리는 행복한 마음으로 소문을 냈고 결국 맥주를 좋아하는 많은 친구들도 자기만의 맥주를 만들기 시작했습니다.

When I moved to Daejeon back in January of 2010 with my husband, the beer scene was bleak. The offers of Hite, Cass and OB were everywhere, but nobody drank the good stuff. So naturally, my hubby brought his American hobby to Korea and started brewing home made beer right in our apartment. The smell was strong, it was humid, supplies were rampant in every single room of our apartment, but we were happy to spread the word and eventually most of our beer-drinking buddies were brewing their own Mek-joo too.

양조기구(재료는 말할 것도 없고!)를 구하는 게 얼마나 힘들었는지는 언급하지 않겠습니다. 그 당시는 그렇게라도 했었어야 했어요.

I'm not even going to mention that getting the supplies (let alone ingredients) was easier said than done, but it just had to be done back in those times.

Fast forward to 2017

요즘 한국에 새로 들어오는 사람들은 편의점에서도 수제 맥주를 구매할 수 있습니다. 대형마트에서는 더 많은 전세계 맥주 컬렉션을 만날 수 있습니다. 발라스트 포인트(Ballast Point), 뒤셰스 드 부르고뉴(Duchesse de Bourgogne) 같은 맥주들이요.

These days newbies entering Korea can now even purchase craft beers from Convenience Stores like By The Way and 7 Eleven. Larger grocery stores, such as Home Plus, Emart and Lotte Mart have an even larger collection of International Beer Varieties, including the likes of 'Ballast Point,' 'Duchesse De Bourgogne'.

Last weekend was very special to my hubby and I, because as co investors we proudly enjoyed the Grand Opening of Daejeon's own Craft Beer Brewery - the only of its kind in Daejeon! (In case it's not clear to some, Weizen House brews its beer outside of Daejeon).

랜치 브루어리는 프레드릭 휘센이라는 프랑스 사람이 세웠는데요. 그는 대전에서 상당한 시간을 지내왔습니다. KAIST에서 2개의 석사학위를 받은 프레드릭은 결혼하고 랜치펍(原 시샤하우스)을 10년째 운영하고 있습니다. 여기는 한국에서 거의 처음으로 수제 맥주를 판매한 곳인데 계속해서 KAIST 근처 궁동에서 운영하고 있습니다.

The Ranch Brewing Company is headed by Frederic Huyssen, who is a French national and has spent a significant amount of time in Daejeon. Having graduated with two Masters Degrees from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Frederic has been married and running The Ranch Pub (originally The Shisha House) for the past 10 years. Their Pub was one of the first to serve craft beers in Korea and continues to serve the public in Gungdong neighborhood, near KAIST.

이러한 과정은 2016년 10월 오래된 음식회사 건물을 완전히 개조해서 거대한 맥주양조용 스테인레스 용기를 만들어야 할 때 시작됐습니다.

The process started in October of 2016, when an old Food Company building had to be completely revamped to welcome the giant stainless steel vessels for beer making.

랜치 브루어리는 5월에 처음으로 연례 수제맥주 음악 페스티벌에서 대전을 대표하는 맥주를 양조했습니다. 브루어리는 다이 잡 골든 에일(Dye Job Golden Ale)과 샌드 캐슬 골든 에일(Sand Castle Golden Ale)을 페스티벌 방문객들에게 제공했지요.

The Ranch Brewing Company started brewing its first batches of beer around May in time to represent Daejeon at their Annual Beer and Music Festival. The brewery served two delicious beers - Dye Job Golden Ale and Sand Castle Golden Ale and were a hit among the visitors of the festival.

이러한 과정을 통해 마침내 2017년 9월 2일 오후 4시부터 오후 10시까지 랜치 브루잉은 그랜드 오프닝 파티를 열었습니다. 6가지 맥주와 새로운 정림 라이 페인 에일(JeongRim Rye Pale Ale)을 대접했는데요. 이는 특별히 오프닝 파티를 위해 양조된 것으로, 오후 4시에서 오후 5시 30분에 방문한 단골들은 무료로 마실 수 있었습니다.

Finally, on September 2, 2017 from 4-10 pm The Ranch Brewing Company opened its doors for the Grand Opening Party. This time they served 6 beers from their line up as well as a new edition - JeongRim Rye Pale Ale. It was brewed specifically for the opening party and the surprised patrons even got to try it free of charge from 4-5:30 pm.

The hungry crowds were also happy to see Daejeon's favorite Steak Truck - Nomnom, which turned into a disco ball of food serving at night.

랜치 브루어리에서의 석양은 결코 잊어버릴 수 없습니다.

And the sunsets never disappoint at the Ranch Brewing Company.

가장 좋았던 맥주가 뭐냐고 묻는다면, 저는 새로운 메뉴인 정림 라이 페일 에일과 사이손을 들 것입니다. 물론, 골든 에일이나 블론디 에일도 무척 좋아하고 마시기 편한 완벽한 여름 맥주지만, 제 의견을 참고하여 한번 가서 직접 마셔보길 권합니다.

What was my favorite beer, you ask, I'd have to go with the brand new JeongRim Rye Pale Ale and the Saison. Of course, I'm a huge fan of others as well - Golden Ale and Blonde Ales are so easy to drink and are perfect summer beers, but why are you listening to me, go ahead and try some for yourself!
